10 WEEK INTENSIVE

What if you could take enough design classes to give you a broad experience and a quality portfolio, for a fraction of the cost of college/university and a fraction of the time?
Forget the HIGH COST of that COLLEGE or UNIVERSITY!
Why pay that HIGH TUITION if you are going to have to work in a virtual environment in the age of COVID-19?
Have you ever thought about the percentage of design classes compared to the amount of classes you have to take to graduate?
What is that cost analysis?
A B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) is 120 credit requirement.
[A B.F.A. requires either more credits in the department and/or credits total.]
Examine how many credits you need within your major of Graphic Design.
Is Graphic Design a major or a track?
If Graphic Design is within an art department,
how many classes in the major compared to the other required courses?
On average are there 5, 6, 10 or 12 Graphic Design specific courses?
Let's just take 10 for sake of math.
10 classes that are 3 credits
is 30 credit hours.
That is 1/4 of the total hours you are required to complete for a degree (BFA will be different).
How much is tuition?
Are you planning on a private school - ranging from 25-40k plus room and board?
That's PER YEAR!
Let's take 25k for sake of math.
4 years is 100k.
1/4 of 100k = 25k.
for 10 classes approximately 2.5k ea
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE YOU TO COMPLETE THOSE COURSES?
Typically you can only take one maybe two classes in your major per semester.
In many cases, you cannot take a class in the design major until at least Sophomore year (age 19?)
So that means that you have 6 semesters to take the 5, 6, 10 or 12 courses?
or a 3 year stint.
Why spend 3-4 years and only taking
one or two design classes a semester if at all?
What if you could compress that studying into a 10 week program?

Tool is just a Tool
The proliferation of the tools we use to implement the creative solutions to problems are pervasive in society along with a long list of default typographic choices and colors.
Some people think you can sprinkle magic fairy dust on the machine and out comes a solution. Well nowadays people can drag and drop, plug and play, even purchase a logo for $5 on fiverr.
What makes you a competitive creative is your brain and how you use it. Coach Val can help.
Why a Coach,
Coach Val works to inspire, motivate, nurture, challenge, and relate to you on a human to human level. Her path in becoming a better teacher every day lead her to these strategies and innovative techniques and coursework moving away from a professorial modality. She walked away from 20 years of teaching and a tenured professor because of many issues with the University system in 2018 to work one on one with different types of students from all walks of life.

WHO ARE YOU?
> I'm curious about design and creativity. I'm motivated to learn.
> I can't afford to go to college, but I'm passionate about the field and want to learn everything I can.
> I'm a non-traditional student of any age looking for one class or more to have marketable skills in career shifts.
> I've always been crafty or creative from drawing, photography, or building things. I think design is a career field for me but I'm not really sure where to start or what to do.
> I went to college and received a degree, but still feel like a need a coach to help me improve my portfolio, focus on improving my strengths and targeting my weaknesses for growth.
.> I'm starting my career or in 2-5 year phase and just feeling stagnant. I'm also being asked to do things out of my comfort zone so I need a coach to help me expand my creative horizons.
> College wasn't for me, but I started some classes and really need help beyond talking head online tutorials.
> I've been working for several years in a related field and I'm being asked to do more and more design work in my role, but I really need a coach to help me hone my skills.
> I've been working for several years and am in need of some creative projects to rejuvenate my design thinking and visual skills.I really can't take time off for a class or masters level so I need a coach to work with me.
> I'm looking to improve my portfolio so I can get back out on the job search, filling in gaps and crafting my work to the job I want, not the job I have.
> I work alone and really need someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to motivate me once in a while or give me those fun assignments I miss from school to get my creative juices flowing again.
> I feel like I'm missing out on something because I'm so far removed from the things I did and learned in school that I really could use a coach to help bring the joy back into my routine and work/life balance. I want to improve things like my type affinity, my use of color, risk-taking, or just projects I can't do because I'm in-house or don't have the type of clients for that work.

MORE QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT THE POTENTIAL PROGRAMS YOU ARE CONSIDERING:
WHEN CAN YOU TAKE THE FIRST GRAPHIC DESIGN CLASS?
Are there pre-requisites?
Are those first classes taught the same way for the last many years?
For example, the same curriculum at both of the institutions where Val has taught starting in 2001 are STILL using most of the same curriculum, if not the SAME ASSIGNMENTS from 20 years AGO!
WHO IS TEACHING THE CLASSES?
Is an adjunct responsible for all or some of the classes? What level?
Adjuncts are typically paid 1k-3k per class depending on the type of institution.
They have less requirements to obtain the job and also to keep the job.
If there are 15-20 people in that class paying on average 2.5k then the institution is making up to 50k on that one course that semester. Maybe the rest of the money goes into the computer lab or the groundskeeping or the staff salaries or to the wallets of the administration.
Is a tenured or tenure-track professor teaching the course?
What course level are they teaching, for example ONLY seniors or lower level or maybe some grad students? Where did they get their degree? What type of degree do they have? Is this a research institution where they only teach 2 classes a semester or more? Are they also academic advisor? What type of research do they do for their professional development? Do they go to conferences?
HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN THE PROGRAM EVERY YEAR?
IS IT A SMALL SCHOOL OR A STATE SCHOOL? DOES IT HAVE A PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENT?
Are there only majors in your design classes or do you have the opportunity to interact with others?
Understanding how many students are in the program, how many adjuncts are teaching the primary content, and how many full time faculty there are will give you an indication to the stability of the institution.
Are they considering you just a customer?

TYPES OF PROJECTS AND COMMITMENT LEVELS
I'm just looking for a brief coaching consultation session and feedback on my work.
I'm just looking for one or two projects to kick me into gear that I would work on my own and check in once in a while.
I would like to have a creative assessment project so that I can be coached and develop an individualized plan.
The plan would include one or two projects that I can work on with some engagement and critique thru the work.
I'm very interested in an assessment, mentorship, and an individualized plan of study that includes up to three courses that will help me rejuvenate, and focus on improving areas of weakness while also targeting my strengths in flexing my solution skill set.
I'm all in. I want to take as many classes as I can to have a full portfolio by the end of a 6 or 12month period. I am available to spend a short amount of time in person at the residency center in TN and am looking for a longer term coaching relationship instead of formal schooling.
TRAVEL EXPERIENCES AND RETREAT WORKSHOPS
I want to learn by doing, by playful experimentation, by discovering new things about the world and myself in the process. Get me out of my comfort zone, out of my routine, and away from my cell phone or work commitments so I can learn about design and creativity through the theme of books.
This is just one of the workshops I offer beyond the online courses. Let's chat!
